LAVA HOT SPRINGS, Idaho – A local toddler is in disarray after her father sustained a really bad boo boo and Band-Aids and little princess kisses didn’t make him feel better.
Marcus D’Angelo was using a chainsaw to cut apart a fallen tree in his backyard when the chain snapped and sliced through his arm like your grandmother’s electric carving knife hacking away at a Thanksgiving turkey. D’Angelo’s daughter, 4, saw the incident and immediately ran over to check on her father.
“I heard him say some naughty words, which he only does when he’s really mad at mommy or hurt,” said Samantha D’Angelo. “I saw his ouchie and ran inside to get my boo boo bag to help him.”
The boo boo bag in question was a Doc McStuffins first aid kit which she uses to patch up her stuffed animals and imaginary friends. It’s full of all the necessary medical tools an aspiring doctor needs, including Band-Aids, a plastic stethoscope, reflex hammer, and otoscope.
“When I went back outside, daddy was already laying down so I could give him a checkup, just like Doc McStuffins,” said Samantha. “He closed his eyes because I think he’s afraid of going to the doctor, but I whispered in his ear that he didn’t need to be scared because I was going to take good care of him.”
The young girl proceeded to hum a friendly tune as she used the stethoscope to listen to her father’s breathing, then looked in his ears before moving his severed arm closer to his body so she could put a bandage on the wound and give it some kisses.
“I used my Bluey Band-Aids, my Frozen Band-Aids, and my brother’s dinosaur Band-Aids,” said Samantha. “Daddy’s resting now. He’s a good patient, I love playing doctor with him.”
Dolores D’Angelo, Marcus’ wife, returned home from the grocery store to find her daughter sitting in the kitchen, eating grapes, and covered in her husband’s blood. Upon finding Marcus’ mangled corpse in the backyard, she called 9-1-1 and first responders declared him deceased on arrival.
“I don’t understand why my Band-Aids didn’t help my daddy,” said Samantha. “Maybe I didn’t give him enough kissies to make him feel better?”
Although the bandages Samantha applied to her father wouldn’t have saved his life, the paramedics reassured her that she was a brave little girl and said they were impressed by her quick thinking and believe she has a bright future in the medical field.
“It’s a tragedy that this little girl had to witness what happened to her father,” said Sgt. Brian O’Neill, the police officer first on the scene. “I wish Band-Aids had the magical properties toddlers think they do. A lot more lives, including Samantha’s father, could’ve been saved.”
