ATLANTA – A memorial service for former first lady Rosalynn Carter was held at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church on the Emory University campus, here, Tuesday, and, while the media’s attention should have been focused on the life and memory of a loving wife, mother, and activist, some opted to devolve its coverage into pure stupidity as it debated the etiquette of Melania Trump’s coat.
Today’s service marks the first time all five living former first ladies—Jill Biden, Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, and Hillary Clinton—were together in the same room since President George H. W. Bush’s funeral in 2018. From the commoner’s view from the television, with the sound turned off, the event appeared to be a cordial and an otherwise warm, heartfelt occasion.
However, the commentary from media members who were probably annoyed this assignment pulled them away from covering Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s budding romance, as well as the peanut gallery online, would make you believe the rapture were upon us (repent sinners, repent!)
“Watching Rosalyn Carter’s memorial, Melania Trump is the only one in church not wearing black. She should have stayed home,” posted Twitter user @BigDogMom3.
“Melania Trump doesn’t wear black to First Lady Rosalyn Carter’s service and looks down. Forever out of place,” wrote @Out5p0ken.
Of course, some eagle-eyed viewers were quick to point out that in some shots of the event, the coat looked darker, begging the question, is that coat gray with black spots or black with gray spots? The online forums were set ablaze with discourse similar to 2015’s white and gold or blue and black dress fiasco.
“Everyone says the coat is gray, but it looks black to me,” said one Twitter user.
“I definitely see the gray, but it’s not a solid color,” said another. “I think it might actually be a black coat with some gray in it. It’s hard to tell.”
Our in-house, self-proclaimed fashion expert, Alexis Bedfellow, believes the coat is gray but appears to be darker because of the lighting in the church and because of the basic mechanics of how cameras operate.
“Why the hell are we even talking about this?” said Bedfellow. “Rosalynn Carter was an outspoken advocate for equal rights and improving mental health care. Even in their nineties, she and Jimmy husband built houses for the needy through Habitat for Humanity. She has done more for this nation than 99-percent of the keyboard warriors out in force today. Stop talking about the damn coat and talk about how incredible this woman was.”
All joking aside, all of us at Alpine 6 Action News, wish to send our condolences to the Carter family and will always remember the incredible impact Rosalynn had on our nation and the world. Thank you for everything.
