AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently announced his new initiative to hire thousands of illegal immigrants over the next several months to help bolster security along the state’s border with Mexico in an attempt to stop the influx of more illegal immigrants flooding into the nation.

The decision took many by surprise as the Lone Star State governor has historically been an outspoken advocate for deportation of migrants crossing the country’s border illegally.

“I have spent a small fortune busing migrants to these so called ‘sanctuary cities’ around the country as a good ol’ fashion fuck you to the democrats,” said Abbott during the press conference where he announced his plan. “It was funny for a little bit, watching them squirm under such a small fraction of the problem we’re dealing with down here, but the price tag for dealing with this problem is getting out of hand.”

According to Axios, Texas has spent more than $86 million busing migrants to sanctuary cities at a cost of nearly $1,700 per person. Although a hefty cost, it’s actually a rather small drop in the state’s overall expenditure when factoring in the billions of dollars it has spent on border security initiatives over the past few years. According to the Texas Tribune, the state has spent upwards of $4 billion between 2021 and 2023 alone.

Abbott’s plan to hire illegal immigrants to protect the border came as a shock to many of his Republican colleagues in the state as well as in Washington, but according to the governor, this plan makes the most financial sense out of all the proposed courses of action that come across his desk.

“I don’t like it, but these people are already here,” said Abbott. “They’re hungry for the American Dream and willing to work for a cost that’s a fraction of what we’re spending to put the National Guard on state active duty. This is a job that no one really wants to do, so I don’t feel that bad about hiring these people. This will not only give us some workers at near-slave labor prices, but it also allows our soldiers and airmen the ability to focus on what really matters: God, family, and training to kill those dirty terrorist bastards overseas.”

But how bad is the migrant situation at the southern border, really? According to statistics gathered by the Guardian, there was a global rise in migration beginning shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. From 2013 to 2019, the monthly average of migrants coming to America at its southern border was right around 39,000 people. As of December 2023, that number has skyrocketed to an average of 309,000 monthly encounters.

So, what’s causing this massive influx of citizens fleeing their countries? Some of the more notable situations include the collapse of the Venezuelan government, political instability in Haiti, violence in Ecuador, and the Russia-Ukraine war.

With an influx this size, it’s easy to see how the border patrol has become overwhelmed. Not helping the situation is the fact the Biden administration has closed many ports of entry along the southern border where these migrants would normally attempt to cross into the country legally. Without additional resources, this problem is a perpetual cycle because, according to officials, these ports were shut down because the sheer number of people crossing the border has forced the border patrol to reallocate their resources to other areas.

Frustrated by the situation and their belief the federal government isn’t doing enough to secure the border, many states, like Texas, have taken issues into their own hands by passing laws to give border patrol agents, police, and the National Guard more authorizations to help crack down on illegal immigration.

Civil rights advocates have argued that these laws have sparked an unwarranted level of racial profiling against Latino residents of the border states. Abbott has countered this argument and suggested that his new initiative would help alleviate this problem because having Latinos patrolling other Latinos on the border would remove any racial profiling because it’s “not white people arresting them.”

In Washington, congressmen from both sides of the aisle are working hard to try and reach a bipartisan border bill that would impose tougher immigration and asylum laws. The $118 billion package aims to reduce the number of illegal crossings at the border, reform our current asylum laws by raising the standards to receive asylum, and turn away anyone who doesn’t qualify.

While the perpetual bickering between Republicans and Democrats in Congress can make issues such as the crisis at the border feel like nothing more than politicized pandering to their respective bases, it may actually be one of the only issues the majority of both sides agree needs to be addressed.

“The Senate’s bipartisan agreement is a monumental step towards strengthening America’s national security abroad and along our borders,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a statement. “This is one of the most necessary and important pieces of legislation Congress has put forward in years to ensure America’s future prosperity and security.”

At this time, it’s uncertain how Abbott’s initiative will be received, but we anticipate this will be a subject of hot debate for the foreseeable future.
