SUPER EARTH – Helldivers 2 is one of the most popular games available on the PC and PlayStation 5 at the moment, amassing more than 200,000 concurrent players on Steam daily. However, shortly after the game’s release, some parents were quick to criticize it as nothing more than government propaganda meant to lure impressionable young men and women to fight its never-ending intergalactic two-front war against the Automatons and Terminids.
“This game romanticizes war and promises these young people that they’ll be heroes if they agree to throw their lives away in the name of freedom and democracy,” said Thomas Pine, father of Damon Pine, a Helldiver who perished in the battle for Melevelon Creek. “Most of these kids aren’t even old enough to remember the unnecessary bloodshed and countless deaths from the first Helldivers game. It’s sickening.”
Pine is just one of many parents to raise concerns about the game’s influential nature on children and their developing minds. However, few have been as vocal since the Ministry of Truth has started cracking down on anyone who has spoken out against the fairly elected democratic government of Super Earth.
“The government doesn’t want us to speak up because they don’t want people to know the truth,” said Sarah O’Donnell, mother of Rebecca O’Donnell, a Helldiver who was killed when she called in a NUX-223 Hellbomb on her own location after being overrun by Terminid bile titans. “They want us to believe we’re fighting the bugs because they’re a threat against humanity, but the truth is we’re harvesting them for fuel. Our children are not the heroes the government wants them to be, they’re just meat for the grinder, sating their pulsating war boner. I honestly feel sick to my stomach thinking about how many innocent kids have died for these lies.”
Despite the recent uptick in anti-government rhetoric from parents of fallen Helldivers, many patriots have come to the defense of Super Earth leadership, claiming the game is a way for people to express their love for the planet’s freedom fighters.
“People used to say video games caused kids to be violent, but as we all know it was never the games that caused violence, it was the gradual collapse of the nuclear family thanks to a rising cost of living, stagnant wage increases, and lack of affordable mental and physical healthcare,” said Steven Finkle, a level 50 Helldivers 2 player and aspiring IRL Helldiver. “I think this game is great; it’s a good way to blow off some steam at the end of a long week of working overtime to barely afford rent. Plus, it gives me a raging hard on knowing I, too, could one day travel to the outer rim of our galaxy to lay genocidal waste to our sworn enemies or die a hero’s death and never have to pay my overdue bills again.”
According to Arrowhead Studios, the developers of Helldivers 2, the game was never meant to be as divisive as it has become. A press release published last week said, “we’ve heard the complaints about our games and all of us at the studio want to express our most humble gratitude for the brave men and women who have answered the call of duty to make the safety of their families a personal responsibility. They have proven, through life and death, that they have the strength and courage to be FREE in galaxy determined on taking that freedom away.”
The Ministry of Truth has denied any allegations that the Helldivers 2 game is officially endorsed by the Super Earth government, but several spokespeople have gone on record to say they believe the game is an outstanding tribute to Earth’s mightiest heroes.
Some parents, including Pine and O’Donnell, have petitioned to have the game removed from Steam and the PlayStation store, but both marketplaces have said they will not remove the game unless officially ordered by the government. So, as it looks right now, the game is here to stay and, if the data is to be believed, it will continue to be one of the bestselling games in recent history.
But will it increase people’s desire to serve their planet? Only time will tell.
Editor’s note: everyone who signed the petition to have the game removed has been apprehended by the Ministry of Truth and ordered to serve time at a reeducation camp. The government has said the arrests had nothing to do with the petition but were served under suspicion of treason.
