NEW YORK – When Marvel revealed it had cast Robert Downey Jr. for the titular villain role in its upcoming film, The Avengers: Doomsday, at Comic-Con, the collective nerdom cheered for the fan favorite’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe but was quickly silenced as they attempted the mental gymnastics of figuring out how the Iron Man actor could play any other character.

In an attempt to alleviate the confusion, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, announced via his Twitter page that the MCU would be utilizing the power of artificial intelligence to retcon RDJ into every MCU role.

“We’ve kinda made a whole mess of this whole multiverse thing,” said Feige. “And Jonathan Major’s legal battles put us in a real bind. Not to mention the fans haven’t really been too happy with the last few films we put out. So, we made the decision to bring Robert back to the MCU because his portrayal of Iron Man was so iconic. People love him. But that obviously adds a whole new complexity to our universe.”

Feige also said the decision to retcon Downey Jr. into every superhero role was meant to make it easier for fans to accept the actor as a different character in the MCU.

“The thing we love about Robert is how versatile he is as an actor,” said Feige. “He can play a British guy, an American guy, a black guy, I haven’t seen it personally, but I have no doubt he could play a woman. He’s basically the entire Avenger’s team anyway.”

Marvel’s plans for RDJ don’t stop at retconning either. According to a leaked memo, the superhero franchise is looking at options for giving Downey Jr. the most lucrative movie contract in the history of cinema and have the 59-year-old New York native actually play every character in the MCU for the remainder of their Phase 4 production schedule.

“If Eddie Murphy can play all those characters in The Nutty Professor, I have no doubt Robert can play Black Panther and Captain Marvel,” the memo said.

Critics of Marvel’s casting decision say it completely ruins Downey’s legacy as Iron Man.

“Robert Downey Jr. built the MCU on his back,” said Sam Guthrie, a Marvel historian. “His character’s death at the end of Avengers: Endgame was gut wrenching but a beautiful conclusion to his decade-long tenure in the franchise. Bringing him back like this feels cheap and a slap in the face to every Marvel fan who left the theater crying after the conclusion of the Infinity Stone saga.”

Despite the backlash, diehard MCU fans are excited to what will happen with this all-RDJ cast.

“I love Marvel and will sign over my entire paycheck to Disney if it means I can get more Marvel movies,” said Derek Disney, who is, in no way, associated with the Disney brand. “Robert Downey Jr. is to Marvel as Mickey Mouse is to Disney. This move makes sense. I love it. I don’t care how bad it is.”
