NEW YORK – Tonight’s Vice Presidential debate between Republican J.D. Vance and Democrat Tim Walz is one of the most anticipated live events of the year.
This could also be the last head-to-head competition between the two major parties before the November 5th election, so both candidates are looking to put everything on the line in order to secure as many undecided voters as possible.
After looking at previous debates for both Vance and Walz, as well as current polling numbers, our senior political analyists have broken down exactly what both candidates need to do in order to win tonight’s debate.
1. Don’t lie
Or, at the very least, make an honest attempt at stretching your lie into a “mostly false” or (better yet) “mostly true” statement. While most die hard republican and democrat voters will believe whatever their candidate of choice says at face value, the moderates and independents may be leaning on fact checkers to decipher who is doing a better job of not feeding them a load of bullshit.
2. Don’t be weird
Oddity is a principle of newsworthiness, but it’s probably not the one you want to cling on to if you’re trying to win a popularity contest. How well did that work for you in high school?
And that’s it! We currently live in a world where these two basic principles of human decency are all it really takes for someone to win a debate and potentially be the second most powerful person in this country.
You can watch tonight’s debate tonight at 9 p.m. EST on your local CBS affiliate.
And don’t forget to register to vote, if you haven’t already, and get to your polling station on Nov. 5, 2024 to make sure your voice is heard in this important election.
