KYOTO, Japan – Nintendo, creator of masterpiece video game franchises like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokémon, has announced it will be re-releasing Superman 64 on the Switch 2 ahead of James Gunn’s Superman movie on July 8, 2025.
Superman 64 is one of the most notoriously bugged and unplayable games in video game history, making many people wonder what Nintendo’s motivation is for re-releasing this game.
“Money,” said Hirotaka Takahashi, director of public relations. “Everything we do is about money. We release this game, we make money. If you talk bad about this game, we sue you and make money.”
While many people in the gaming community have questioned Nintendo’s decision, especially given the original game’s extremely poor performance, several have had to admit they’re intrigued by what the company has in store for it.
“I remember buying Superman 64 when I was a kid because Superman was my favorite superhero,” said Thad Silverstein, a Twitch streamer known as Klux. I’ll never forget how bad it was but how much potential I thought it had, being Superman and all. I hope Nintendo will come through and give us the game my eight-year-old self wished for back then.”
It won’t.
According to Takahashi, the company is simply porting the original game over to the Switch 2, but not making any visual or gameplay improvements. They aren’t even updating the keybinding to coordinate with the Switch 2 controller.
“We do not need to improve the game,” said Takahashi. “Superman 64 is notorious for being a bad game. This is good. People will buy the game to relive the badness. It’s nostalgia. Nostalgia sells. If they want good game, they buy a game that does not suck.”
While the decision to re-release a game that’s universally known to be a failure without any improvements seems like a terrible business plan, it actually appears to be working.
According to third-party data, Nintendo’s re-release of Superman 64 has already surpassed $1.2 million in pre-order sales.
“Dude, I remember how fucking terrible this game was,” said Craig Smith, an adult. “I can’t wait to get it on the Switch to show my kids how fucking terrible it is.”
Superman 64 is currently available for digital pre-sale on the Nintendo Store for $69.99.
