The Nutgraf Excellence in Journalism Excellence Awards, commonly known as “The Nutties”, were created in 2024 by the editorial staff at Alpine 6 Action News to celebrate the diversity in journalistic storytelling. Unlike the less popular Pulitzer Prize, the Nutgraf Awards focus on the accomplishments of individual journalists, rather than organizations.

Generally good general reporting
This award goes to a reporter who has done an exceptional job informing the public about the important topics around their community.
Eyeball satisfaction Wizard
We love photos. Real photos. Not graphics generated by artificial intelligence, not images heavily manipulated in Photoshop, and definitely not old school photo ninjas altering photos in a dark room. This award is for the best real photographer of the year.
Nobody saw that
In a perfect world, live news would go off without a hitch. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world. Far from it, in fact. This category celebrates Murphy’s Law and everything that can go wrong. But then again, at least we can all laugh at the blooper afterwards. (Best live-broadcast blooper award)
You’re not a real journalist, anyway
In an era where most major media outlets are little more than shell corporations for partisan propaganda magnates, most young Americans turn to social media journalists to keep them informed. Unfortunately, big media says we’re not allowed to call you real journalists. Congrats!
The golden vocal cord award
Some people have a voice that makes you want to wrap yourself up in a blanket, snuggle by the fire, and drift off to sleep. This award is for the Morgan Freeman of news.
A face made for radio award
It’s easy to overlook our radio people because, well, we never see them. But this award is meant to change all that. This award goes out to the best radio broadcaster of the year!
