FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – After the New England Patriots’ disappointing loss to the Indianapolis Colts at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, Germany, which dropped the six-time Super Bowl champs to an abysmal 2-8 record, one fan has apologized for his behavior during the team’s historic two-decade dominance with Tom Brady.
“I let the team’s success get to my head, I think,” said James Hernandez, 22, a lifelong Patriots fan. “Winning was automatic when Brady was on the field. Not every ‘W’ was pretty, and my nerves were usually shot by the end of the game, but you knew the team was going to win the AFC East and go deep into the playoffs each year.”
Hernandez also said he admits in hindsight that the longevity of the Patriot’s legacy was something never before seen. “Looking back, I’m lucky to have been able to spend so much of my life as a fan of a team with so much success. Not a lot of people can say that. But I also think the fact that we suck now hurts so much worse coming off such a historic high.”
Of course, fans of the other 31 teams in the league are not sympathetic for Hernandez or any other Patriots fans.
“God, I hate the Patriots and I hate their fans; I’m so happy to see them suck,” said Henry Culver, a Buffalo Bills fan—a division rival of the Patriots and a team which only has one championship game appearance, a loss in Super Bowl XXVIII against the Dallas Cowboys. “It’s time for a new AFC champion and the Bills are gonna be it, baby. Wooo!”
Under the on-field leadership of quarterback Josh Allen, the Bills are in a good place to compete for the title of AFC East champions this year, but the divisions other two teams (the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins) are also contenders with all three teams within two wins of each other. Right now, the AFC East is a bit reminiscent of the Middle East with previously insignificant groups fighting for dominance in the power vacuum left behind by the fallen monarch.
This power shift has opened Hernandez’s eyes to the person he was three seasons ago when Tom Brady first left the Patriots to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020.
“I didn’t realize how much of a dick I was to other people,” said Hernandez. “I think part of that is just because I’m from Massachusetts. But I also assumed I was better than other people—’specially Giants fans, fuck them—but that’s because of how good the Pats were. Now, without Brady, people are rubbing it in my face like I did to them. I get it now. It sucks. I’m sorry. I’ve definitely had my serving of humble pie and I can say, without a doubt, that shit ain’t from Dunks.”
The Patriots are on a bye week next week and will next play the 2-8 New York Giants on Nov. 26th, but don’t expect a rematch of Super Bowl XLVI. It’s probably going to be a flag-ridden fiasco that will leave us searching for live updates on Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s budding romance.
