NEW LONDON, Conn. – As Hurricane O’Houlihan pulverizes the East coast of the United States, weather experts—sometimes called meteorologists—are saying this is the worst hurricane to make landfall since the last worst hurricane to make landfall.

With wind speeds averaging 157 miles per hour, O’Houlihan is just as powerful as Hurricane Steve in 1987, but not quite as powerful as Hurricane Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch in 2025, which was the last worst hurricane to make landfall since the last worst hurricane before that.

“It’s the first hurricane of the season, so of course it’s the worst hurricane since the last worst hurricane,” said Barbara Meyers, mayor of New London. “This is not hyperbole. This is not fear mongering. We haven’t seen a storm this bad since the last time we saw a storm this bad,”

O’Houlihan’s mighty power has already proven deadly as reports were coming in early this morning that Mr. Thomas, a 12-year-old British Short Haired cat was swept away in a flash flood near Cromwell.

“Mr. Thomas was a brilliant pet and my best friend,” said Becky Paulson, 6. “I will miss his whiskers tickling my face to wake me up in the morning and when he brings me the decapitated corpse of our sworn enemies, the evil rodent cohort known as the Legion of Mice.”

State officials are encouraging citizens to evacuate if possible or to shelter in place until the storm has passed to increase their chance of survival.

“I saw a video on TikTok of some drunk UCONN students riding around shirtless and shooting off fireworks in the back of a pickup truck struggling to make it through the flood waters,” said Tad Crater, director of the Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. “Don’t do that. Just … don’t. Get out if you can. If you can’t, hunker down in your home until the storm passes. I pray you stockpiled enough cheese to see this through.”

Crater also said, as Hurricane O’Houlihan continues to push its way inland, the people of Connecticut need to be prepared for the worst-case scenario as this is, according to all reports, the worst hurricane to hit the state since the last worst hurricane hit the state.

“I cannot express just how much this is the worst hurricane to hit the state since the last worst hurricane hit the state,” said WTNH Meteorologist Summer Weathervane. “And it’s important we take this storm seriously because this will be the worst storm to have ever hit Connecticut until the next worse storm to hit the state since this one hits. We need to be prepared.”
