WASHINGTON (Alpine 6 Action News) — House Speaker Mike Johnson sought to clear up what he called an “unfortunate misunderstanding” Sunday, explaining that the House of Representatives did not leave Washington early to avoid voting on articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Instead, Johnson said, lawmakers were sent home because Hegseth was extremely excited that Jake and Logan Paul were coming to the Pentagon and wanted everyone to stop bothering him so he could show his favorite YouTubers where he works.
“People are making this into something political, and frankly, that’s ridiculous,” Johnson said. “Pete had been talking about this for weeks. Every morning it was, ‘Mike, guess who’s coming to the Pentagon?’ And I’d say, ‘Yes, Pete, I know. The Paul brothers.’ Then he’d tell me again after lunch.”
The explanation comes after Johnson ended House business early Wednesday, preventing an expected vote on Rep. Thomas Massie’s articles of impeachment against Hegseth before lawmakers departed Washington for an extended recess.
Johnson insisted the timing was entirely coincidental.
“Thomas Massie can introduce whatever he wants,” Johnson said. “But Jake and Logan Paul were coming Thursday. Pete had already cleaned his office. He bought snacks. He made a little itinerary. What was I supposed to do?”
According to Pentagon officials, Jake and Logan Paul visited the building Thursday, toured the Pentagon, visited the Sept. 11 memorial, addressed service members and briefly met with Hegseth.
Witnesses said Hegseth spent much of the morning waiting near the Pentagon entrance while repeatedly checking his phone and asking staff whether anyone had received a text saying, “here.”
“They’re here! They’re here!” Hegseth reportedly shouted after a black SUV pulled up outside the building.
It was the wrong SUV.
Sources said Hegseth returned inside briefly before running back out approximately seven minutes later when the Paul brothers actually arrived.
The brothers, who rose to fame through YouTube before expanding into boxing, professional wrestling, podcasts, energy drinks and the general monetization of being recognizable, were given a tour of the headquarters of the most powerful military on Earth.
Hegseth reportedly began the tour by pointing toward the Pentagon and explaining that it has five sides.
Logan Paul nodded.
Jake Paul reportedly said, “Damn.”
The tour then continued.
At one point, Hegseth allegedly showed the brothers a secure conference room before an aide reminded him that he could absolutely not show the Paul brothers the secure conference room.
“Right, right, classified,” Hegseth said before closing the door. “Anyway, there’s some crazy stuff in there.”
Johnson said canceling House business also allowed Hegseth to focus entirely on preparing for the visit without worrying that lawmakers might impeach him while he was explaining the Pentagon food court.
“Imagine trying to meet your heroes while Congress is voting on whether you committed impeachable offenses,” Johnson said. “You wouldn’t be mentally present. Pete deserved to enjoy this.”
Hegseth reportedly prepared extensively for the visit, including watching several hours of Paul brothers content, practicing the phrase “Let’s freaking go” in front of a mirror and asking Pentagon staff whether PRIME Hydration could temporarily replace water fountains throughout the building.
The request was denied after military planners determined the logistical requirements would exceed those of several NATO deployments.
During their visit, the Paul brothers addressed service members from the Pentagon briefing room, offering words of support and admiration for members of the military.
Hegseth watched from nearby with his arms folded and a smile Pentagon employees described as “the happiest anyone has seen him since someone renamed something the Department of War.”
The visit also answered longstanding questions about what qualifications are necessary to receive access to senior Pentagon leadership.
According to officials, the current requirements include either possessing a security clearance, conducting official government business or having accumulated several billion views on YouTube.
Officials stressed that applicants with fewer than 10 million subscribers should continue using the Pentagon’s normal visitor entrance.
Massie, meanwhile, is expected to renew his effort to force consideration of the impeachment resolution when the House returns.
Johnson said lawmakers will have plenty of time to discuss constitutional questions, congressional war powers and executive accountability later.
“Congress has been around since 1789,” Johnson said. “Jake and Logan Paul were only going to be at the Pentagon for one afternoon.”
Asked whether the House would similarly recess if MrBeast wanted a Pentagon tour, Johnson stared silently at reporters for several seconds.
“We would need to see his schedule,” he said.
Hegseth declined to comment on the eight articles of impeachment awaiting him when Congress returns, telling aides he has never liked peaches and does not understand why Congress keeps trying to give him eight of them.
